We have some additional sites, besides this one, that we'll be using before/during/after the meetup - just wanted to let everyone know!
Flickr - There's quite a few that add photos here, in addition to our own photoblogs, during/after the meetup - you can see the previous photos here and here. If you do upload to Flickr, please tag them with 2007epmeetup.
YouTube - We'll have a Flip Video to play with, so expect some videos to be posted here and on YouTube.
Twitter - Notifications throughout the weekend (like, "we're at pub XYZ" or "meet us at location FOO for photos") will take place via Twitter. Basically, you sign up and give it your mobile phone number, then subscribe to receive notifications from epmeetup, then as we send SMS updates with meetup info, you'll be instantly notified.
Let me know if you have another other ideas on cool stuff we could do.
Ok, so I signed up for Twitter. So now I just send an SMS to the number everytime I want the subscribers who follow me to know where I am?
Seriously, I can't even believe this exists. This is the silliest business idea I've ever heard, and I think it's brilliant.
Yep, that's how it works. You can use and SMS, IM or the Twitter site to update your status - those that are "following" you will get an instant notification (via SMS or IM), so it should work for quick updates to let people know where we're at or what we're doing. As long as they're following a couple of us that is.
It's a pretty cool service that's all the rage now - Jaiku is a similar app that a couple of friends of mine work on.
Short question concerning this Twitter-thing: do I have to pay for each text message sent to me or is it all free?
I assume you have to pay for each of them - sent and received.
Hi Julia,
The short answer is, it depends on your carrier and the text plan that you have. Here's some additional information that I found:
http://help.twitter.com/index.php?pg=kb.page&id=64
http://twitter.com/blog/2007/03/reminder-standard-rates-do-apply.html
I don't see us sending out a ton of these announcements over the course of the weekend. If you get too many, you can always unsubscribe by texting "off epmeetup" once you have signed up and confirmed your mobile number.
The other nice thing about Twitter, is that you can choose to follow us (or any other Twitter user) via Web or IM instead of SMS.
Thanks!
so i've signed up with twitter and configured it to send messages to my phone. i think;)
